Ischia.Sicily, Lazio, Campania, Lombardy, Emilia Romagna: the long trail of fires in Italy, 250 blazes in three years, 80 from May to today.
The flames that hit the waste selection and treatment plants increasingly replace the illicit traffic. This is the complaint that emerged from the first moments of the International Forum on the economy of waste promoted by the Polieco consortium, in Ischia.
From a more careful analysis, it emerges that, often, each fire is connected to other realities in the sector that have undergone either an inspection or a seizure or another event of waste combustion. What is underlined is the lack of controls with respect to the release of authorizations for plants that often do not have the necessary requirements to manage piles of waste.
Huge quantities that in truth are only incorporated into the logic of receiving a mere economic profit, without this being supported by an adequate and legal disposal capacity. The situation has worsened with the ban on the import of certain types of plastic waste, recently issued by China: in fact, by lacking the relief valve towards third countries, mountains of waste are created that catch fire.
It is therefore legitimate to suspect – according to the organizers of the Forum – that there is a connection between the various fires and a deviant management of waste.
