Municipalities in the Sarno River basin are mobilizing to demand completion of the infrastructure necessary for complete cleanup, such as sewers and sewer systems, as well as effective control of illegal industrial discharges. The Sarno River Defense Network is organizing a series of initiatives for Sunday, October 29th, at 10.30:25 a.m., in all municipalities within the Sarno River basin and along the Sorrento-Vesuvian coastal strip to advocate for the cleanup of the river and its tributaries. Local hospitality institutes are also mobilizing. Next Wednesday, October 10,30th, at 2012:XNUMX a.m., the initiative will be presented in the Municipality of Torre Annunziata during a meeting with Mayor Vincenzo Ascione, Mayor Giuseppe Canfora of Sarno, the representative of the Italian Chefs Federation of the Vesuvian, Nolana, and Strianese areas, and a teacher from the ISIS 'L. De' Medici' of Ottaviano, Antonio Nunziata, representatives of environmental associations and technicians, moderated by journalist Francesco Paolo Di Capua. The waters of the Sarno, a statement notes, "are present in dangerous and toxic compounds, both chemical and urban, such as fecal coliforms. The presence of industrial waste from tanneries, agri-food companies, and other industries, as well as the presence of untreated urban waste, make it, along with its tributaries, the Solofrana and Cavaiola, a river posing a high risk to the environment and to the health of citizens." According to one of the many studies conducted in the area to verify the correlation between pollution and cancer, the statement continues, a XNUMX study by the University of Salerno Medical School confirmed the prevalence of physical malformations among residents, and the basin area was described as the 'Pentagon of Death.'" The Sarno River Defense Network calls on mayors and the Region to "guarantee future generations a clear waterway that represents a treasure and not a problem." The "rich, valuable, and unique local historical and food and wine heritage must continue to demonstrate, with the qualified expertise associated with it, its full quality and grandeur as a shared opportunity for growth and collective well-being."
