Drug trafficking: A 'Ndrangheta fugitive, believed to be affiliated with the Pesce clan of Rosarno, has been arrested in Campagna, in the province of Salerno. At dawn this morning, along the SS 91, Carabinieri officers from the Investigative Unit of the Salerno Provincial Command and the Eboli Company, with air support from the 7th Helicopter Unit of Pontecagnano Faiano, arrested Domenico Pepè, 62, from Rosarno, in the province of Reggio Calabria. He was charged with aiding and abetting a 48-year-old prosecutor, also from Rosarno. The man was staying at a farm, a passion that has led to his arrest for the second time, as in 2014, he was arrested by finance police at a farm in Castrovillari.
The first was served with a precautionary custody order issued by the Court of Reggio Calabria – Review Section on November 30, following the rejection of an appeal by the Court of Cassation against a previous order of July 23, 2016, by the same Court, at the request of the local District Anti-Mafia Directorate – because he was under investigation for conspiracy for the purpose of international drug trafficking.
The other individual was reported for aiding and abetting for having facilitated Pepè's escape.
The latter was located by the military in a farmhouse in the area, where he had presented himself with false documents. He had been untraceable since last November, when the restrictive measure was issued, resulting from a complex investigation originally conducted by the Carabinieri of the ROS and the Investigative Unit of Reggio Calabria, aimed at countering the trafficking of large quantities of cocaine, supplied in the Dominican Republic and Peru by the 'ndrangheta clan attributable to the Pesce family of Rosarno. In particular, Pepè is said to have played the role of organizer and financier of the trafficking and to have had direct contact with the foreign suppliers.
The man was transferred to the Salerno prison at the disposal of the judicial authorities.
Being a fugitive was not a new condition for Pepè, nicknamed Uncle Mimmo, who had already gone on the run in 2014 to avoid being arrested.
He was caught by the financiers of the Castrovillari company, after an escape of about six months. According to investigators, Pepè is an affiliate of the Piromalli/Pesce 'ndrangheta clans. Pepè, in the past, had been involved in the extortion affair against Medcenter Container Terminal Spa, a company that manages the freight terminal of the port of Gioia Tauro. In that case, too, Pepè was in a farm in Castrovillari.
