The second edition of the Festival of Metropolitan Vineyards of Naples will take place from 30:30 to 2:30 pm at the Cellaio del Real Bosco di Capodimonte. The Festival will focus on metropolitan vineyards and those of historical significance located in several royal sites. The Festival aims to fill a gap in knowledge regarding the city of Naples, which ranks second in Europe, after Vienna and ahead of Paris, in terms of hectares of vineyards within its municipal territory. In Europe, for years now, an exclusive network of metropolitan cities has emerged that have successfully promoted this resource, such as Paris—with the Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre, now in its 84th edition—and Turin—with the Vigna della Regina, born from a virtuous collaboration between the public (Superintendence of Piedmont) and the private (wine production company). The first edition promoted the existing vineyards between Posillipo, Agnano, Chiaiano, and the Camaldoli, with excellent feedback from the public and industry. With this second edition, the Festival's steering committee would like to shine a spotlight on what was undoubtedly one of our city's historic vineyards: the Royal Vineyard of the Garden of the Princes, located within the so-called Royal Delight. Research conducted at the Botanical Garden Archives reveals that: "The Garden of the Princes, an integral part of the Royal Delight, housed fruit trees, citrus groves, a nursery, and—south of the Casino, close to the walls—a large vineyard." Documentary evidence regarding this is scarce, due to the redevelopment of the area undertaken in 1840 by Friedrich Dehnhardt, but is further confirmed by the contemporary existence of vineyards on the large estates and farms that occupied the Capodimonte area. For this reason, the Cellaio in the Royal Wood of Capodimonte will host the final day of the Festival on Saturday, January 27, 2018. The conference, "The Recovery and Valorization of Historic Vineyards," will begin at 10:30 a.m. Speakers will include Sylvain Bellenger, director of the Capodimonte Museum and Royal Woods; Nino Daniele, Councilor for Culture and Tourism for the City of Naples; Enrico Panini, Councilor for Economic Activities for the City of Naples; Piero Mastroberardino, who will present the case history of the "Villa dei Misteri" wine, a project launched in 1996 in collaboration with the Archaeological Superintendency of Pompeii; and Leonardo Ancona, director of the Carolino Aqueduct Park, who will explain the project to restore the cultivation and management of the ancient Bourbon vineyard known as "Vigna di San Silvestro" in the Royal Palace of Caserta. The meeting will be moderated by Tommaso Luongo of the AIS Naples and scientific director of the Festival delle Vigne Metropolitane of Naples.
