An 83-year-old man was executed by lethal injection in Alabama for two 1989 bombings. The southern state has thus set a new record for the oldest person executed in the United States since 1970, when the death penalty was reinstated. The oldest person to have been executed was John Nixon, who was executed in 2005 at the age of 77. "Walter Leroy Moody was executed for the 1989 murder of federal judge Robert Vance," Alabama Governor Kay Ivey's office said in a statement. Moody is believed to have sent the explosive package that killed the judge. "He was also found guilty of killing a Georgia civil rights lawyer," added Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall. Moody, who has always maintained his innocence, was arrested in 1990 and sentenced to death for Vance's murder in 1997.
