Prosecutor Roberto Felici ordered an autopsy and the seizure of the machine where the young man, who suffers from cystic fibrosis, was attached, as well as his cell phone and medical records. The results of the autopsy are expected within sixty days. Esposito had been hospitalized in the department since May 5 to undergo a series of tests to verify the possibility of a lung transplant. "My brother was lucid and alert," his sister Michela told Il Tempo, "but after having the tracheotomy, starting from the evening of Sunday, May 13, his condition began to worsen."
The situation worsened on the night of May 16. “Around two in the morning,” his sister continues, “Giuseppe sent a message to my mother asking her to report everyone, that they were killing him. We rushed to the hospital and found that the health workers were carrying out the treatment and that the problem was related to the machine, the Ecmo that is used to lower the level of carbon dioxide in the blood, whose filter needed to be replaced.” “At seven in the morning on May 17,” adds the young man’s sister, “we were informed that the situation had dramatically worsened: they made us enter the ward and at 7.20:XNUMX Giuseppe’s death was declared.”
Giuseppe Esposito's agony was experienced minute by minute by his sister's friends on Facebook. From the boy's first post in the middle of the night ("They're killing me") to Michela's complaints: "Left to die alone like a dog, I won't leave you!" The dramatic post published by Michela Esposito with the SOS launched by her brother via cell phone: "They're killing me".
She sits at the keyboard and writes to her contacts on Facebook: «I am too biased and too involved probably but I trust you and I would like to know what you think of these messages in your opinion what could they mean??? My brother hospitalized for 20 years with cystic fibrosis with a stable situation at 23.30 pm attached to a machine that two days before had problems that acted on the circulation at 2 am sends us this message it will be his last message we will see him dead at 7 when at 3 we were already there and waiting for communications and we were continuously told in sequence he sleeps alone ….. we have sedated him …. and everything is fine …. rest assured …. we are fixing the machine that has some problems ….. at 7 we can't do anything more he has low blood pressure we saw him dead time of death 7.27 but he was already dead in our opinion.
Be naked and raw I want to know what you think! Good morning! #justiceforgiuseppe».
Later, an update from Michela: «The last messages from my brother Giuseppe… He had a tracheotomy, he couldn't speak, he was sedated, he couldn't rebel, we couldn't say goodbye to him, he left us only this… we ran and they told us to stay calm… they let him bleed to death, he didn't die from cystic fibrosis.
The sick must be respected, they will never be your alibi! I will not give you peace!
NEVER!!!! #justiceforgiuseppe»
As soon as they learned of the incident, the General Management of the Policlinico Umberto I started an internal investigation, coordinated by the Health Director, to ascertain the facts". This is what the General Manager of the hospital-university company, Vincenzo Panella, declared regarding the episode reported today by Il Tempo and on which the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office opened a file after the complaint filed by the family of Giuseppe Esposito, 20 years old, who died on May 17 while he was hospitalized in the Transplant Department of the Policlinico Umberto I in Rome. "We are close to the young man's family, seriously affected by the premature loss - continues Panella - and we assure you that we will do everything possible to ascertain whether there were responsibilities and malfunctions attributable to this health facility".
“The Verification Commission has ascertained that during the hospitalization all the care required by the case was provided, without delays or omissions by either the medical or nursing staff.
Furthermore, the equipment used for extracorporeal blood oxygenation support was found to be in perfect working order, is of the latest generation and complies with European regulations". This is what the general management of the Umberto I hospital declared in a note regarding the case of the boy who died while waiting for a transplant. "The Verification Commission, promptly established by the Management of the AOU Policlinico Umberto I, conducted the appropriate technical investigations, completing the relevant checks in the evening" the hospital underlines, adding that the equipment "acquired last October has been regularly subjected to ordinary maintenance interventions".
The general management announces that the boy "under treatment at the Federico II University Hospital in Naples, arrived in serious conditions at the Policlinico Umberto I in Rome for the activation of the 'urgent' transplant procedure, which as such, implies a very short life expectancy based on the clinical conditions". "The Policlinico Umberto I has full confidence in the work of the judiciary, offering maximum collaboration for the ascertainment of the facts" concludes the note.
