The XIII edition of Riciclaestate is starting, the campaign that brings the theme of separate waste collection even on vacation, as the historic claim says. The event is promoted by Legambiente Campania with the contribution of Conai, Consorzio Nazionale Imballaggi.
Riciclaestate represents an opportunity to make citizens and tourists aware of the importance of virtuous behaviors regarding separate waste collection, promoting and facilitating the creation of a circular economy made in Campania, through the recycling and reuse of packaging waste, the saving of virgin raw materials, and the increase in the quantitative and qualitative levels of separate waste collection.
The Riciclaestate itinerant journey will touch the main tourist resorts and municipalities of the inland areas in the months of July and August, with the setting up of an information point at the beach establishments, in the free beach areas, in the squares and within the main summer events organized by the municipalities participating in the campaign. In addition, Legambiente volunteers will distribute gadgets and materials on separate waste collection, organizing workshops and games on recycling for children aged 5 to 16, with the aim of making useful objects with the materials recovered on the beaches of Campania.
This year with Riciclaestate the protagonists will be citizens and tourists. Through an online questionnaire it will be possible to express an opinion on the quality of separate waste collection in the location chosen for the holiday. An action of active citizenship, a way to contribute to the citizen science of Legambiente, a scientific research activity in which citizens participate as protagonists.
Riciclaestate is an event that year after year is attracting more and more participants both at the level of Local Authorities and among citizens and tourists, demonstrating how collaboration between different entities - Municipal Administrations, Conai and the supply chain Consortia, Coast Guards, beach resorts, accommodation facilities, citizens and tourists - can constitute a starting point in the promotion of quality separate waste collection, contributing significantly to improving the image of the territory while respecting its natural beauty and encouraging sustainable tourism for the local economy.
"The circular economy in our region is a truly viable path and our Recycling Municipalities are proof of this. Today, to enter the Olympus of sustainable waste management, it is necessary to focus on quality and prevention policies, to definitively close the emergencies that still loom over our territory - explains Mariateresa Imparato, president of Legambiente Campania - To do this, we must first overcome the prejudices on the subject of waste that arise, yes, from concrete concerns, but that can be overcome thanks to an alliance of all the actors of the regional and national circular economy. In our region, there are entrepreneurial excellences that we can count on and, starting from these, we must work to change the connective tissue of the Campania economy to set up a real sustainability and circularity project. We need to extend good practices to the entire region, we need cutting-edge administrations, virtuous citizens and attentive and sustainable businesses, we need to complete the network of plants to treat organic waste, recycling plants for all supply chains and fractions in places that are still lacking, production sites for preparation for reuse, and apply all the technological innovations that are able to recover material from waste that until yesterday was considered non-recyclable”.
The circular economy, in addition to being good for the environment, is also good for the country, as demonstrated by the data released by the European Commission: in fact, there is talk of 580 thousand jobs estimated in Europe (190 thousand in Italy) by 2030 with the achievement of the objectives of the circular economy package, with a saving of 72 billion euros for European companies thanks to a more efficient use of resources.
“This year too, Conai is alongside Legambiente Campania to promote Riciclaestate 2018, raising awareness among tourists and citizens about the value of proper waste separation, with particular attention to packaging waste” – commented Giorgio Quagliuolo, President of Conai. “In Campania, waste separation shows peaks of excellence combined with improving situations and this is why keeping the level of attention of citizens and local administrations high is essential to increase its qualitative and quantitative levels, transforming packaging waste into new resources”.
With Riciclaestate, Legambiente's summer of commitment kicks off: tomorrow, June 26, the journey of Vele spiegate begins, the project of volunteer camps on sailing boats in Cilento, with volunteers from all over Italy committed throughout the summer to cleaning beaches and seabeds and scientific research, while in July Legambiente's Goletta Verde arrives in Campania with the first stop in Vico Equense on July 8 and on July 10 in Marina di Camerota.
