“I met the authors of the offensive posts… let’s move on to the real Camorristi…”. Don Salvatore Purcaro, the parish priest of Brusciano who yesterday received threats for his post commenting on the anti-racket blitz with the arrest of the boss Rega and his affiliates, wanted to reassure everyone with a new post. The parish priest explains that he met the relatives of those arrested who had commented in threatening tones and that he forgave them.
“With gratitude, together with the Interparish community of Brusciano, I welcome the embrace of solidarity that many have given me. In particular, thanks to Bishop Francesco Marino for his support and closeness. It is precisely in the presence of the Bishop that one grasps the meaning of my intervention, which is not an isolated act but part of a journey that as a diocesan church sees us engaged daily in the territories and not just today. Therefore, solidarity and closeness to all the parish priests who play a very precious role in the culture of the common good and in the service of honesty. It is not a question of fighting crime alone, as guerrillas of legality, we would end up being justicialists and Jesus was not! We must welcome the root of the Gospel which is an invitation to conversion and to the journey behind the Master. This is what every Parish Priest must do and does in a synergic action with all the beautiful forces of the territory so that the invitation to conversion, that is, to recover the authentically human, can be declined in all areas of living and dwelling. Therefore, in this chain of collaborations between schools, politics, information, volunteering, the Christian community must do its part in accordance with its role. If it were silent out of fear, it would betray its ministry in the service of peaceful coexistence between peoples. Regarding the events that occurred, I invite you not to exploit the comments of some relatives following my post yesterday. I have just met them by making an appointment with them at the home of a relative of those arrested yesterday. I wanted to hug them. The tone of their posts was certainly aggressive, motivated by the anger accumulated between yesterday and today. We spoke, the carabinieri will ascertain what the crimes are, but they apologized to me, they appreciated my gesture of entering their home, and they asked for forgiveness for the posts written. I have forgiven them from the heart and I invite everyone to pray for them who are relatives of some of those arrested, but this does not authorize us to offend them by going beyond the scope of the facts. Conversion in the Gospel is announced to us as possible starting from a saving love that, despite sin, in Jesus becomes close to everyone, even to Zacchaeus. I therefore add to the invitation to Conversion, a declaration of love: Whoever you are, whatever your sin, God loves you and the church awaits you to walk with you on the path of change”. He had received comments of solidarity from the many honest citizens of Brusciano and the surrounding area and from the leaders of the Church of Nola. Today Don Salvatore puts an end to the controversy by explaining the meeting.
