Three people, believed to be members of the Mele Camorra clan, active in the Pianura neighborhood of Naples, have been issued a precautionary detention order, issued by the Naples preliminary investigations judge (GIP) at the request of the local Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA). The arrest warrants were executed by officers of the Naples Flying Squad against Giuseppe Mele, Salvatore Mele, and Antonio Bellofiore, all already detained and held jointly responsible for the aggravated murder of Vincenzo Birra, committed in the Pianura neighborhood of Naples on the night of July 13-14, 2013. The suspects are charged with murder and illegal possession and carrying of a firearm, aggravated by mafia-related practices. The statements of collaborators of justice, particularly those of Raffale dello Iacolo, known as Toc Toc, confirmed by the investigations conducted by the Flying Squad and coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, have shed full light on the motive for the brutal crime, the instigators, and the perpetrators, who were the target of the restraining order. According to the prosecution's theory, the decision to kill Birra was made by the Mele brothers, the undisputed leaders of the Mele criminal organization at the time. They had decided to punish the victim, who was guilty of revealing to outsiders his participation in the murder of Fosco Di Fusco, committed in concert with other members of the Mele clan.
"A few days ago, my son confided in me that he had participated, as a material perpetrator, in the murder of Di Fusco Fosco, known as Foschetto, killed in Pianura on June 28th, without providing any further details." Giuseppina Delfino, a desperate mother, was questioned by the police immediately following the murder of her son Vincenzo Birra, a member of the Mele clan of Pianura killed on July 17, 2013. The woman hoped to provide useful information to help them quickly find her son's killers, and explained to investigators: "...I know that my son had recently been hanging out with Catone Antonio, Arillo Vincenzo, the brothers Giuseppe and Salvatore Mele, Bellofiore Antonio Aversano Luigi, and others whose names I don't remember; he often frequented number 93 Via Napoli, the so-called quadrilateral area." This chilling tale is contained in the pre-trial detention order signed by investigating judge Tommaso Parrella, who jailed 28 bosses and associates of the Pesce-Marfella clan and the Mele secessionists in Pianura. It's likely that Vincenzo Birra was lured into a trap by people he trusted. Vincenzo Birra probably had an inkling and wanted to give his mother a rye. But it wasn't enough. The order contains several intercepted phone calls between him and Vincenzo Arillo. The two jokingly call each other "love." And Vincenzo Birra's murder becomes the subject of commentary among the Mele clan itself. On July 16, 2013, two days after the murder, investigators in prison recorded a conspiracy between the boss Giuseppe Marfella, known as "Peppone", his son Mario and his nephew Domenico Russolillo, "from which - the investigating judge wrote - it was clear that the murder in question had been the result of an internal purge within the Mele clan.
