CGIL Confederation Secretary Giuseppe Massafra commented on the operation by the police, the Carabinieri of the Benevento investigative unit, and the NAS of Salerno, which yesterday led to the arrest of five people and the registration of 36 others as suspects following an investigation into the management of immigrant reception centers in the Sannio area, stemming from a complaint by the CGIL itself. Massafra stated in a statement: "Our fight against exploitation, for the dignity of workers and migrants, and for justice, thanks to the work of the judiciary and law enforcement, has led to a remarkable result. We will not stop." Massafra explains: "In 2015, the CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labour) of Benevento denounced the severely degrading and inhumane conditions in which migrants were forced into local reception centers. Three years later, justice is taking its course, exposing a criminal system that, with the connivance of public officials, was illegally collecting money through rigged migrant assignments, false certification of guests' presence in the centers, and overcrowding in the centers." For the CGIL confederal secretary, "yesterday's arrests demonstrate that the perseverance of an organization rooted in the local area, which fights every day for the rights of workers, citizens, and migrants, pays off." Furthermore, Massafra adds in conclusion, they demonstrate "that the war on exploitation and crime should be waged first and foremost against those who profit from the deprivation of vulnerable and vulnerable people, rather than against the latter, leaving them adrift at sea and closing ports."
