Attempting to fabricate evidence to arrest a fake terrorist, they later repented and apologized to the victim and the Carabinieri. Appearing before the investigating judge of the Naples North Court, Vincenzo Saladino, who signed the pre-trial detention order, Amedeo Luongo, Castrese Verde, and Giuseppe d'Aniello (who were suspended from duty and held in the military prison of Santa Maria Capua Vetere) for preliminary hearing, the three officers declared that they did not identify with the actions perpetrated during the twenty days during which they carried out the false arrest of Osman.
The three carabinieri apologized to the Ghanaian but also to the uniform they wear, stained by serious accusations such as ideological falsehood, slander, illegal possession and carrying of clandestine weapons. The investigations that brought to light the illicit activity of the three carabinieri on duty in Giugliano were conducted by the Guardia di Finanza of Aversa. The investigative activity was coordinated by the Public Prosecutor of Naples North, Francesco Greco, in collaboration with the deputy Domenico Airoma.
Despite knowing that Osman was innocent, the three carabinieri are accused of planting documents to demonstrate the intention to carry out an attack with dozens of victims in a well-known shopping center in Giugliano. The soldiers had worked to find two guns, flyers from the shopping center indicating the access routes, a copy of the Koran and material containing fundamentalist propaganda linked to ISIS, including a notebook praising Allah and several manuscripts.
According to what has been learned, the three soldiers would have completed this false investigation in order to obtain a commendation. As stated in the order, "this was an opportunity to exploit not only to gain the trust of their hierarchical superiors but also to rise to the honors of the news as saviors of public safety and heroic guardians of order capable of defeating a deadly terrorist cell on their own."
