He killed his mother in a fit of madness, first hitting her with a heavy object and then attacking her with a knife. After the crime, he went to the local police station to turn himself in, admitting to the murder. It happened this afternoon in Pozzuoli, in a residential park in La Schiana, not far from the city hospital. A pleasant and scenic area, inhabited by professional and upper-middle-class families, it has been shaken by a tragedy that has affected particularly well-known and respected people. The State Police, who arrived on the scene with a large deployment, are maintaining the utmost secrecy regarding the investigation. They are now working with forensic technicians to identify the numerous traces of blood and devastation inside the apartment. At the time of the crime, it appears that the 32-year-old murderer and his 59-year-old mother were alone: the father and another of the woman's daughters, who lives in a nearby house in the same park, were not present. Some neighbors report, though this rumor has not been officially confirmed, that the man suffered from depression to the point of attempting suicide and was undergoing treatment for it. Others say they heard screams coming from the apartment, suggesting an altercation between the man and his mother. The only certainty, for now, is that the woman was brutally attacked. The residential park where the tragedy occurred is called "Sibilla Costa del Sole," one of the most famous residential complexes in the area, renowned for its views and the architecture of its numerous villas. The scenario is completely different from that of a similar tragedy that shook the Phlegraean Fields less than two months ago: in the municipality of Qualiano, bordering Pozzuoli, a 37-year-old man suffering from bouts of depression killed his mother, then barricaded himself in the home—on the busy Corso Campano—with a rifle. After nine hours of fruitless negotiations, Carabinieri special forces raided the apartment and captured the murderer alive. The perpetrator of today's crime, however, voluntarily turned himself in to law enforcement. The 32-year-old is still at the Pozzuoli police station, where he reportedly went immediately after the crime. His lawyer recently joined him. The crime scene is filled with grief and tension. An elderly relative of the victim felt unwell, prompting an ambulance to arrive. The police have removed reporters and photographers.
