He had been arrested for aiding illegal immigration and was therefore incarcerated in Bolzano prison to serve a long sentence. The man, originally from Chechnya but a long-time resident of Austria in the Vienna area, learned during his time in the prison in the South Tyrolean capital that his 7-year-old daughter Hadishat had been killed (on May 11) by a 16-year-old boy in Vienna-Doebling. The man is now being sought because he escaped from prison, failing to return after a prison leave. The crime, most likely committed by 16-year-old Robert K., a member of a Chechen family, shocked Austria. The young man killed the girl by stabbing her with a bread knife and then left her body, wrapped in nylon, near the garbage. He was arrested a few days later. Apparently, the young victim's father was not provided with psychological counseling and, after a five-day leave, he escaped. The family of the suspected perpetrator of the brutal murder is fearful and fears retaliation, but Hadishat's family lawyer, Nikolaus Rast, reassures them, telling the Austrian news agency APA that "a blood feud is not in the family's interest." It is not excluded that the escaped father has traveled to Chechnya, where his daughter is buried. The crime had sparked a wave of xenophobic comments on social media in Austria, reigniting the debate on hate speech.
