Also this year, as is now tradition, the Coast Guard is launching the complex operation “Mare Sicuro” which will see the Maritime Directorate of Campania involved, under the coordination of Rear Admiral Arturo FARAONE, to protect the safety of swimmers, defend the marine environment and guarantee the safety of those who go to sea.
The summer season, in fact, represents the time of maximum use of the sea and the coasts by the community and the personnel of the Port Authorities - Coast Guard are called upon to carry out the delicate task of discreet but ever-present supervisor, to guarantee the peaceful and safe performance of bathing activities by sea users and, if necessary, of strict guardian of order with regard to dangerous and illicit behavior.
These are the key concepts of the operation “Mare Sicuro 2018” that until September 16th will see over 100 men and women and about 50 naval vessels of the Maritime Directorate employed every day, along all 500 kilometers of the Campania coast. In fact, the presence of the military of the Port Authority – Coast Guard is expected during periods of greatest influx along all the coasts of the region, with particular attention to the sites considered “sensitive” due to the greater influx of seaside tourists, who will have the task of:
Ø surveillance of sea areas reserved exclusively for bathing, ensuring that they are respected by pleasure boats and jet skis to prevent them from causing danger or disturbance to bathers;
Ø verification of the safety arrangements of the bathing establishments (life raft, presence of a lifeguard, first aid equipment, etc.) as well as the launch corridors and buoys delimiting the waters reserved for bathing
Ø verification of the positioning, by the competent Administrations/Bodies, of warning signs on free beaches, particularly on highly frequented ones, indicating any limitations to safe bathing;
Ø verification and supervision of the efficiency and safety of ferries and high-speed vessels used for the transport of passengers that operate maritime connections with the islands of the gulf and the most popular tourist destinations;
Ø protection of the marine and coastal environment: one of the priority objectives to be pursued, both for the richness of the naturalistic heritage of the Campania region, and for the significant social and economic interests involved in the use of the related resources.
An operation therefore conducted in the name of "transversality", as a synthesis of the work and effort that the Port Authority Corps - Coast Guard carries out within the scope of its functions and tasks related to the civil and productive uses of the sea, including - first and foremost - the protection of human life at sea, but also the safety of navigation, the protection of the marine and coastal environment, and controls on the entire fishing industry.
The strengthened commitment thus aims to ensure rapid rescue interventions for bathers, boaters and divers and to guarantee more intense controls on all activities carried out at sea, to prevent illegal conduct, dangerous for people, for the environmental heritage, for the marine ecosystem and for fish resources.
The Coast Guard has decided to take the field not only with operational activity to safeguard human life at sea, but also with a strong awareness campaign for all those who will live in contact with the sea. The exceptional testimonial of the Campania Maritime Directorate is Davide TIZZANO, multiple Olympic rowing champion and a character loved by the public, who enthusiastically joined the initiative, supporting the men and women of the Coast Guard in promoting messages on safety at sea and the protection of the marine and coastal environment. The goal is to promote the "culture of the sea" and to transmit to all users a "culture of self-control", which translates into a greater sense of responsibility and, therefore, safety. A campaign full of important useful advice that will accompany us throughout the summer on the Coast Guard's social profiles Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and on the institutional website.
Also this year the “Bollino Blu” initiative will be promoted which, with the introduction and provision within the new recreational boating code, will allow boaters to experience the sea avoiding a duplication of controls on navigation safety and, therefore, more serenely.
In recalling that the “Number 1530” for emergencies at sea is always active on the national territory free of charge for the citizen, it is reiterated that a serene and happy summer is born from the respect of a few but essential rules summarized in the attached brochure.
