“Given that the constitutional principle of reintegration of the convicted remains the guiding star for me, that reform undermines the principle of certainty of punishment, because it allows some not to serve even a day in prison”. This is what the Minister of Justice Alfonso Bonafede (M5S) said, interviewed by Corriere della sera, regarding the prison reform approved by the Gentiloni Government. “That reform, which in other respects is positive, has extended the perishing of discretion too much. There was a deflationary purpose that we cannot accept. I am not interested in reducing the number of prisoners, but in guaranteeing their respect for dignity even in prison”.
