The arson fire that struck the cliffside town of Ascea Marina started from several points. It broke out around 4:00 a.m. and had already engulfed a kiosk when firefighters from the Vallo detachment arrived on the scene.
The flames were presumably set with gasoline on one of the wooden platforms built near the caves by the Cilento Park Authority as part of the redevelopment project of the cliff area. The one who noticed the fire was the caretaker of the Mediterranea company, which carried out the work and manages the area. The worker noticed a man wandering around in a suspicious manner who was filmed by surveillance cameras and interviewed by the Carabinieri this morning. At the moment, no charges have been filed against him. This is not the first worrying episode recorded in the area. In recent weeks, other acts of vandalism have been reported by the company.
The fire fortunately caused only material damage, but the episode has raised concerns for an area of particular environmental value, recently enhanced thanks to the Park Authority project costing millions of euros. The mayor of Ascea, Pietro D'Angiolillo, has announced additional security measures in the area, with other cameras, in addition to those of the Park. "These reckless people - says the mayor - will not get away with it". Gabriele Palladino, administrator of the company Mediterranea, joins in the anger: "This is a regrettable episode that worries us, in recent days we have also suffered thefts". After the inauguration of the Lovers' Path, the area was given to the management of the company, with the construction of small wooden structures and an area to organize shows for the summer.
