'Ndrangheta trafficked in weapons of war: 28 arrests

The Reggio Calabria State Police, coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of the Reggio Calabria Public Prosecutor's Office, is executing 36 precautionary custody orders (15 in prison, 13 under house arrest, and 8 for presentation to the judicial police) against individuals held responsible, to varying degrees, for criminal conspiracy aimed at trafficking illegal weapons, connected to and functional to the activities of the 'Ndrangheta, criminal conspiracy aimed at trafficking narcotics; as well as a wide range of crimes involving the illegal possession and carrying of illegal weapons, including pistols, submachine guns, and weapons of war with related ammunition, and the cultivation of numerous cannabis plantations and the sale of drugs, primarily hashish and marijuana. The investigation by police officers from the Reggio Calabria Flying Squad has uncovered the organizational structure and operations of a dangerous criminal organization that operated a massive illegal arms trafficking ring in the Locride area and other parts of the province of Reggio Calabria. The investigation revealed how individuals connected to the Commisso clan of Siderno and members of the Cataldo clan of Locri, forming a fearsome criminal network, had the capacity to manage the trafficking of hundreds of deadly weapons of all types and calibers, including AK-47 Kalashnikov submachine guns, 9mm Luger pistols, Walter PPKs, and .35-caliber pistols. 44 magnum.
