Former international referee Sergio Gonella has died at the age of 85. The announcement was made in a tweet by the Italian Referees Association (AIA), of which Gonella was president from 1998 to 2000. The former referee from Asti officiated the 1976 European Championship final in Belgrade, which ended with Czechoslovakia's victory over West Germany on penalties. In 1978, he refereed the World Cup final between Argentina and the Netherlands in Buenos Aires, which the Argentine national team won 3-1 after extra time. In 2013, Gonella was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame. "The Italian Referees Association extends its condolences to his family," the AIA tweeted.
