Residents of Torre Annunziata took to the streets again to protest the expansion of the hydrocarbon storage tanks in the port area by Isecold, the company that already manages the silo area along the coast.
The Salera Committee, promoter of the mobilization, asks that the area, which has been found to be heavily polluted by hydrocarbons, be designated for remediation and that the expansion of the tanks be stopped. Senator Virginia La Mura of the 5 Star Movement has signed the complaint presented to the Torre Annunziata Prosecutor's Office by activists and members of the Salera Committee, Orfeo Mazzella and Pina Valente.
“I have decided to support the legal action taken by the committee, a further form of pressure to prevent the devastation of the territory,” reads a note from La Mura. “That area must be designated for reclamation to protect the health of citizens, the sea and the environment and cannot be the object in any way of further speculation that will not bring any benefit to the territory – added the senator – the landscape constraints, the necessary reclamation and the mobilization of citizens must impose clear and precise choices and we will never fail to support this fight. In addition to the complaint to the Prosecutor's Office, we will support the battle against the expansion of the cisterns in all locations, starting with those in Rome, to ensure that clear indications reach the governing bodies of the territory that are based on the principle of safeguarding health and the environment. As a spokesperson I am working together with the Salera Committee to develop an even broader form of pressure to prevent this absurd speculation”.
