Peppe Barra will be the guest of Arci Movie's "Cinema around Vesuvius" series on Friday, June 22nd, presenting "Napoli Velata" by Ferzan Ozpetek (also scheduled for Thursday the 21st). No one better than Barra can tell the story of our city, having been a part of its history. The evenings with guests at Villa Bruno are curated by Antonella Di Nocera. "In this work," says Barra, "Ferzan has captured all aspects of Naples: veiled, revealed, cultured, ignorant, plebeian, noble, and a little languid. A city overwhelmed by the hype it's being subjected to, unable to rediscover a more human dimension, and thus risks excessive overexposure. Fortunately, Naples always has the ability to notice things that insiders no longer grasp, and in this constantly changing world, there are still people like me who continue to do things the way they know how, with the sole purpose of revealing this city's enormous heritage. I'm happy to present the film in San Giorgio a Cremano, Massimo's hometown. I've had many invitations, but I chose this historic and popular arena that has brought cinema to people's hearts for years."
During his time in Naples directing “La Traviata,” staged at the Teatro San Carlo, Özpetek met people who helped him discover aspects of the city he didn’t know, and he was struck by the similarity between it and Istanbul, his hometown: “they are similar in the way people feel and their attitudes, and they both have the sea. There are strange ties.” The director was also struck by the “strong sense of death” that hovers over Naples, “but Neapolitans play with it and make it something not to be afraid of,” he said. For this reason, he decided to set a noir-tinged film there, also wanting to distance himself from representations in the style of Adriana, a pathologist uncomfortable with the living, meets Andrea, a young man who seduces her and loves her passionately for a whole night. Adriana is overwhelmed, finally alive. When she wakes up, she smiles at him and says yes to their first date. But Andrea doesn’t show up for that romantic rendezvous. It is the beginning of a police and existential investigation that will lead Adriana into the belly of Naples and a past, where a mournful repressed is incubating. The film obtained eight nominations for the Nastri d'Argento, eleven nominations and won two David di Donatello.
