Eighty-nine percent of Campania's waters suitable for bathing are classified as "excellent," according to Stefano Sorvino, Commissioner of ARPAC (Campania's Regional Environmental Protection Agency). "The classification, as many know," Sorvino explains, "was last developed at the end of 2017, based on data from the last four years of monitoring. Then, in early April, ARPAC began sampling again. The data from recent months, which we regularly publish on our website, essentially confirm the suitability of nearly all coastal stretches whose waters were deemed suitable for bathing at the end of last year." However, during the monitoring campaigns in April, May, and June, some water levels exceeded the legal limits in some coastal stretches classified as suitable for bathing. In these cases, the Agency promptly informs the relevant municipality and recommends implementing a temporary bathing ban. "Almost all of these cases, however," underlines the Arpac commissioner, "have returned to normal based on the results of the additional samples required by law in the event of exceedances." For three remaining situations of this type, in which there are still no favorable results (two in the province of Salerno and one in Naples), new samples will be conducted in the coming days.
