The Guardia di Finanza seized inside the commercial port of Salerno numerous and valuable African and Asian ivory art objects, python, crocodile and monitor skins and objects, but also very rare corals and shells, an amphora of Phoenician-Punic tradition. The cargo was hidden in a container arrived from Eritrea, declared to customs as containing personal effects by two Italian citizens returning from Africa who were reported at large.
The seized material, due to the size, value and weight of the individual pieces and considering the excellent state of conservation and workmanship, represents the most important seizure of the species carried out this year by the Gdf.
Important discovery: the amphora of Phoenician-Punic tradition dating back to between the 5th and 3rd century BC. The operation was conducted in collaboration with the Customs and with the help of the Salerno forestry carabinieri.
