Naples Metropolitan Police officers and NOE Carabinieri have executed a precautionary custody order issued by the investigating judge of the Naples court at the request of the local anti-mafia prosecutor's office, as part of an investigation that represents the continuation of a similar investigative maneuver from May 2016. The Metropolitan City of Naples reported the news. The investigations, which were carried out from November 2016 to September 2017, concern the trafficking of waste that would have been conveyed to the Apostolico and Tanagro quarry in Comiziano in the Nolano area, and the resulting crimes of pollution and attempted environmental disaster. In particular, the investigative activities have allowed us to establish how the suspects, in order to obtain "an unjust profit consisting of the economic return from not bearing the costs ordinarily due for the disposal of waste at authorized sites, with multiple operations and through the preparation of vehicles and activities, illegally managed large quantities of waste". It is thought to be at least 72 thousand tons. The waste – according to the prosecution’s hypothesis – was taken from various sites, including the construction sites for the Naples subway. Five precautionary custody orders were carried out. Satisfaction was expressed by the metropolitan councilor for the Police, Carmine Sgambati, for the operation that “deals a very hard blow to the illegal waste disposal system and that for years has poisoned our land”.
