Plastic waste, demolition and construction debris, bricks, and discarded tires were collected from two areas designated as illegal landfills and used as road subgrade to widen the deceleration lane leading to a service area currently being developed on the State Road 7 quater, the famous Nola-Villa Literno highway. This artery, a symbol of environmental degradation, bisects the provinces of Caserta and Naples, crossing all the municipalities of the so-called "Land of Fires." This is what emerged from investigations conducted by the Carabinieri of the Caserta NOE (Environmental Operations Unit), who seized two areas in Villa di Briano, in the Caserta area, totaling approximately 2000 square meters, containing nearly 1200 cubic meters of waste, as well as several mechanical equipment used for excavation and waste transportation, worth approximately €750. Carabinieri investigators determined that the work on the highway, entrusted to a construction and earthmoving company from Aversa, was actually carried out by a subcontractor from Giugliano in Campania (Naples), which, however, operated without any permits for waste transportation and disposal. The latter's employees, it emerged, collected hazardous waste from two areas in Villa di Briano and transported it to the construction site on the Nola-Villa Literno highway. Representatives of both companies and the workers were all charged with the illegal disposal of large quantities of hazardous waste, effectively constituting an illegal landfill.
