Mercurio App was presented today in the Conference Hall of the Viminale in Rome, an application that, when downloaded voluntarily onto a cell phone, allows police officers, even those off duty, to directly contact the operations room to report an alarm for any dangerous situation in progress. The Minister of the Interior, Matteo Salvini, and the Chief of Police, Director General of Public Security, Franco Gabrielli participated in the press conference to present the extraordinary innovation of the territorial control system that, using contemporary tools, will allow the State Police to amplify the action of prevention and fight against crime, multiplying the forces in the field.
The policeman, even off duty, who witnesses a robbery, who notices the presence of weapons on board a car or who has any other serious suspicion for safety, having downloaded Mercurio App, will already be identified and located on a map and will be able to raise the alarm directly. In the operations room, a dedicated and priority audio streaming (one or two-way) will automatically open and, based on the assessment of the situation, all available forces can be sent to the scene in the shortest time. Thanks to the application, the policeman will be able to send audio files, post photos and videos, with an interactivity that replicates the typical language of social media. The positive experimentation in 11 provinces has allowed the extension of the system to 44 Police Headquarters, those equipped with the Mercurio technological platform, and 1.500 police officers have already downloaded the application on their cell phones. By the end of the year, the entire national territory will be covered with additional features of the application, such as the man down that will allow the operations room, through the gyroscope of the cell phone, to understand if the operator is down, as a fundamental form of self-protection of the policeman himself.
The press conference was also the occasion to present the results of the high impact operation ESTATE SICURA 2018 aimed at a strong counteraction against criminal organizations that, taking advantage of the absence for the holidays, burgle apartments causing economic losses and an even more serious social alarm and feeling of insecurity. The operation carried out on 2, 3 and 4 July last involved 20 cities[1] and will be repeated every fortnight involving the whole national territory in a checkerboard fashion.
