The Arezzo Highway Police have charged two men, a father and son aged 51 and 26, originally from Torre Annunziata, with money laundering. They were transporting more than half a million euros in cash in a BMW with Croatian plates. The incident occurred Saturday night on the A1 motorway, between the Monte San Savino and Arezzo toll booths, where the car was stopped inside the Badia al Pino service area by a patrol car from the Arezzo Sub-section. The 51-year-old was already an acquaintance of the Battifolle Highway Police: in 2001, he was caught transporting 80 million old lire in cash of dubious origin in a Ford whose insurance he had also falsified. The officers, convinced they were up to some shady activity, took the two to the station to further investigate. Their instincts were right this time too: under the floor of the trunk, the two criminals had hidden eight cellophane-wrapped packages containing numerous bundles of cash, for a total of 550.000 euros.
Finding themselves caught, the two criminals used their imaginations to try to justify their possession of the wealth, claiming they were headed to Germany to buy an apartment and that the money was the proceeds of the sale of a restaurant and a generous gift from the head of the family's mother. Unfortunately for them, however, thanks to databases, officers knew neither had a stable job and that the 51-year-old had not declared any income for ten years. The Highway Patrol reported the two for money laundering, seizing the car and the money. Investigations are continuing to trace the source of the money.
