The two brothers Nicola and Antonio Spina from Ponticelli were ready to flee to Germany after being arrested in Scalea where they had taken refuge in recent times after having moved several times immediately after the murder they had committed. Emanuele 'Little Pea' Errico. There are a series of wiretaps, including those of some relatives who frame the two and who led the carabinieri to their last refuge. Uncle Antonio, who lives in the Poggioreale area and who had hosted one of the two brothers during the escape, speaking to a friend of his, had said: “He said, Tonino, are you going to deal with these people in Germany? Are you really going to do it?, I said. They are in my hands, I will throw them away... you will get rid of them...". And the friend in return says to him: "But why, are you going back to Germany now?". But what raised the alarm among investigators about the possible escape abroad of the two was a wiretap between Nicola's wife and his mother: "He said he wants to go away. He can't stay forever, whether they come to get him or not", the woman confides to her mother who however replies: "But he can go away, but him first, with you it's not a thing yet. He has to go first, he has to find a job, he has to find a house and then you can go too."
Business, and arguments, linked to stories of stolen and recycled scooters. All this is said to be behind the double ambush that the brothers Nicola and Anthony Spina carried out on the evening of April 26 in the Conocal neighborhood. The chosen victims were Emanuele Errico, 19, who died that evening, and Rosario Denaro, who was wounded in the leg. The two were considered 'guilty' of having burned the Spina's scooters and for this they deserved to be killed. Today the brothers were arrested by the Carabinieri, in Calabria. It all happened shortly before 20:25 p.m. Errico was under house arrest for drugs at the time. He escaped, was chased and killed outside his home: a single shot to the shoulder with a semi-automatic pistol. The person who was with him, Rosario Ciro Denaro, from Volla, also already known to the police for drugs, was hit by a bullet in the left leg. After months of investigation, the military discovered what was behind that double ambush. There had been tensions between the two gangs for some time over the division of business and profits, which culminated, however, on the evening of April 26, the day before the murder. In the stairwell of a council house, the scooters of the Spina brothers were set on fire: the fire was so big that it also damaged some apartments. The Spinas started a real investigation: they managed to get the images of a video surveillance system of a shop in the area and, thus, discovered that their scooters had been burned by Errico and Rosario Denaro. Hence the punishment and the double ambush. The Spina brothers escaped on the evening of April 22. In the first few days they took refuge in the Caserta area, in the Castel Volturno area, then they were hosted in an area of Poggioreale, a neighborhood of Naples, and then again, at the beginning of June, in another house in the same neighborhood. Then, it was Calabria's turn. Towards the end of June, the two brothers on the run went their separate ways: Nicola Spina, 18, went into hiding in Calabria with his wife and children, while all trace of the 2-year-old disappeared. At the beginning of July, the turning point. The brothers reunited in Scalea, in one of the apartments in a park of terraced houses; together they had begun to plan a plan to escape abroad. The carabinieri quickly organized all the details for the capture, "covering" all possible escape routes: the youngest was stopped as he was leaving on foot in the direction of Scalea; the same fate for the older brother, caught in the house with his wife and two small children. The investigating judge of Paola validated the arrest and ordered the two to be held in prison.
