He was hit by a fleeing mugger, whom he had tried to stop, and is now hospitalized with a guarded prognosis. The victim is a former finance police officer from Eboli, Antonio Schiavone, 52. He suffered a bilateral pneumothorax with multiple pulmonary contusions and is under constant observation. Now the Carabinieri, thanks in part to public and private surveillance video, are tracking the robber who ran over him. The incident occurred in the Laura area of Capaccio-Paestum. Schiavone was in a car with a friend when yesterday morning he heard a woman screaming for help after being mugged. The former finance police officer got out of his car and, seeing a man running away on foot toward a car with its engine running nearby (it was the accomplice waiting), he stepped in front of the Lancia Y to stop it. Meanwhile, several swimmers from the nearby beaches had rushed over and blocked the mugger's accomplice from reversing. The driver accelerated, hitting Schiavone, while his accomplice fled on foot. A search for the car and the two bandits is now underway throughout the area.
