A 26-year-old Neapolitan woman, AA, has been charged with child abandonment, and an investigation is still underway to clarify a possible false paternity claim. Municipal police officers rescued the black newborn baby, who had been entrusted by his mother to a drug addict she knew. The woman was supposed to care for the child for 20 euros a day. The "nanny," a Georgian woman, went to the office of an association that provides foreign caregivers because she was looking for work. She had the baby with her, who immediately appeared to be in poor health. The association's manager, also suspicious of the woman's unclear statements, immediately alerted the police. The newborn, who had been kept almost starved and deprived of any hygiene, appeared weak and unresponsive, perhaps due to the high summer temperatures. He was immediately examined and fed, and subsequently placed in a protected care facility. The mother showed up at the offices to claim the child only the following day, without bringing any document certifying her presence. She admitted that she had no fixed abode and that she was taking care of the child alone, who was not recognised by the natural father, whom social services are now trying to trace.
