Enrico Mentana has decided to launch an online newspaper. He announced it on Facebook, explaining his desire to help young journalists find a space. "The time has come for me to do something tangible: create a digital newspaper produced exclusively by young, regularly contracted journalists, which can reopen the journalistic writing and reading market for the new generations," he wrote in a post. For himself and "some 'old hands'," Mentana reserves the role of "editorial oversight, perhaps on an amateur basis (reversing the internship model!)," and for content, "a portion of the funding and the daily contributions of writings I've posted on Facebook to date."
Mentana explains in the post that “the generation of the 50s and 60s” was able to realize the dream of being journalists, something that is now denied even to the best of today's young people”. “I tried to explain why this almost total closure took place (similar to that of many other professions). The crisis of the traditional press, the collapse of advertising, the reduction of profits due to the use of the web, the ever-increasing cost of journalistic work already in place in relation to publishers' income, and much more. The result, however, is that we are still sitting, protected by contracts that protect us, well paid, with an independent health insurance fund and a pension waiting for us. Outside, many young people, potentially more than deserving, are waiting standing and without guarantees. And readers and viewers are like us: after all, a product made by sixty-year-olds, with twentieth-century methods, is followed by custom, tradition and similar political-cultural coordinates by an audience in which young people are not present or almost not at all”.
“If it can be supported with financial contributions and advertising, fine. If – as is inevitable at least at the beginning – it is in the red, I will take care of it. If – as I hope – it becomes profitable, all the assets will be used for new hiring and collaborations. If for their own reasons there are companies or patrons able to help without expecting anything, they will be welcome. For advertising, the one who makes the best offer will be chosen. I will ask the order of journalists and the FNSI what the most correct regulatory and contribution grids could be and only then will I think about how to start the recruitment”.
