Nine video surveillance stations will be active on Via Novelle Castelluccio, Via Osservatorio, and along the trails of the Vesuvius National Park within the municipality of Ercolano to prevent the fires that devastated large swathes of greenery last summer. The Vesuvius National Park is funding the video surveillance system, while the location was decided in collaboration with the municipal administration, led by Mayor Ciro Buonajuto. Buonajuto stated, "The video surveillance network launched last year has been completed: with nine fixed stations, Ercolano will be the most monitored town in the park area. This is a significant step forward in preventing and combating environmental crimes. Tomorrow, at the park headquarters, these important innovations will be presented in the presence of the Minister of the Environment, Sergio Costa, who as a Carabinieri General worked so hard for our region." Also with a view to prevention, a permanent firefighter station is active in the Osservatorio area. The Vesuvius National Park Board of Directors has accepted the request of the Park's President, Agostino Casillo. "As Vice President, I, along with President Casillo and all the members of the Board, fought for this essential result for the protection of citizens and the environment," added the mayor. "Now everyone must be fully aware. We also need social condemnation of those who, with no respect for the environment and the beauty of our land, are stealing a piece of our children's future."
