A few days before Valentine's Day, he stole a dozen tubes of Baci Perugina chocolates to give to his partner, but was stopped by the mall's security guard. After two years of trials, Vincenzo L., a 40-year-old Neapolitan man with no criminal record, was acquitted. The honorary judge of the Torre Annunziata court, Patrizia Acampora, acquitted the defendant due to the triviality of the crime. It was February 2016, when the 40-year-old went to the Auchan shopping center in Pompeii. After a trip to the supermarket, he paid for a bottle of water, but attempted to walk out with ten boxes of the typical Valentine's Day chocolates without paying for them. He was caught by the supermarket's security guard, who stopped him while awaiting the arrival of the Carabinieri from the Pompeii station. Vincenzo L. was charged with aggravated theft, while the Baci Perugina chocolates were returned to the store. With a clean criminal record and no legal issues since, the 40-year-old paid approximately €200 to Auchan in Pompeii, a sum more than double the value of the chocolates. At that point, after assessing his position, Judge Acampora decided to acquit the 40-year-old. While it's true that he had committed a theft, he hadn't done it for profit or any other hidden motive. And then, he paid compensation. A trial that lasted nearly two years, but it proved the 40-year-old's (almost) innocence. He risked a conviction for theft for a handful of chocolates he stole to show his love to his partner.
