Scafati. "I can't make any promises, but I can tell you that as a ministry, we will do everything we can to avoid wasteful situations like this and to provide the political impetus to give you everything you haven't been able to get in recent years." Health Minister Giulia Grillo arrived at the Mauro Scarlato Hospital in Scafati this morning, accompanied by regional councilor Valeria Ciarambino, for a visit. The emergency room has long since been converted into a first aid station. "I've already said," the minister stated, speaking of the Scafati hospital, "that reopening the emergency room is a complicated issue. The hospital is open; we need to figure out what to do with it. And above all, as residents were saying, we need to manage the emergency network. Because it's not a matter of a single hospital. It's a matter of services. The funds are there. If De Luca told me yesterday that they're paying off all the debts, it means the funds are there." Then the Minister from Scafati took a swipe at the President of the Region, Vincenzo De Luca: "How can someone who is also supposed to be President of the Region be Health Commissioner? It seems a little complicated and even a little ambitious." Referring to the role held by Vincenzo De Luca, he asked: "What authority does a Regional President have to be a commissioner? We asked ourselves? Is it a political issue or a technical issue?" The minister explained that a "commissioner is like a mega-manager who must understand what he's doing." And, referring to the law that allowed regional 'governors' to be appointed commissioners, he reiterated what he has said many times: "I absolutely would not have expanded, and in fact we voted against it," given that "you have to ensure quality for the citizens. And the moment you appoint a commissioner to the region, you're putting it in the hands of a single person who must solve all the problems that others have failed to solve." Regarding the timeline for the end of the administration in Campania, Grillo emphasizes that "the final discussions aren't good," but "we'll look at the numbers and evaluate them. I'll certainly do my part, respecting regional autonomy, but not abandoning the citizens." After the Ospedale del Mare in Naples and the Mauro Scarlato in Scafati, he's now moved on to the San Leonardo in Castellammare di Stabia. Regarding emergency rooms, he emphasizes that he's seen some in Campania that, "like many in the South, are overloaded with so-called green codes that could, instead, be easily handled by an effective local network. This is a job that the emergency medical services should also do. We need to strengthen general practice."
