Exclusively for Italy, among the world's best slide guitar players, Joe Colombo will open the fourth edition of the Baronissi Blues Festival. In a trio formation, Colombo will be the protagonist of the event that is characterized by its increasingly international vocation, Tuesday 17 July at 21 pm, strictly free admission. The live performances will be enhanced by the evocative scenography of the Municipal Amphitheater "Pino Daniele", illuminated by the light of the stars. The Irno Valley thus transforms into the home of the blues with a varied program that embraces the different shades of the blues, aimed at involving an increasingly heterogeneous audience among the fans of the genre. A journey in music from New Orleans to Los Angeles, from Switzerland to Belgrade, until reaching the ends of the earth, to the roots of the blues, with broad leaps towards the new avant-gardes, between experimentation and contamination.
Born and raised in Switzerland, Joe Colombo began playing guitar at the age of twelve, after his parents introduced him to the music of Jimi Hendrix. By the age of sixteen, Joe was already playing in several local bands. His guitar skills and slide technique developed at the age of twenty, when he decided to move to Los Angeles, playing exclusively on special electric Dobro guitars. Thanks to his aggressive and energetic sound, he is undoubtedly one of the most interesting musicians on the European blues scene. Joe plays with both passion and energy, drawing inspiration from the vibrant style of great contemporary guitarists like Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan, before moving more deeply into the traditional meanders of classic blues slide guitar. Colombo also masterfully blends his passion for American music, making him a musician of great depth. His album Natural Born Slider (2002) made a huge impression on critics, leading to his being featured on the Jimi Hendrix tribute albums “Voodo Crossing” and “Gipsy Blood.” His new album, StratoSlider (2017), is an intense, energetic contemporary instrumental blues and features eight original songs, including “Johnny D.,” dedicated to his inspiration, Johnny Winter.
The opening will be entrusted to The Bubbles from Salerno, the only band selected to represent the Campania region. A mix of Anglo-American influences and modern pop sounds that do not betray the clear matrix of cheerful 60's rock ancestry, with a rock & roll with catchy melodies, vintage taste and a tamarro sound. Their live show stands out for its strong scenic impact: skimpy clothes, women's glasses and a vague sense of ambiguity.
In 2015, they crossed borders and landed in Turin, where they won first place in the national contest "Wanted Primo Maggio," setting the stage at Hiroshima Mon Amour ablaze with their out-of-tune guitars and ambiguous sexuality. Their victory at Wanted opened the doors to major festivals in northern Italy, and that same year they embarked on a tour of northern Italy's big cities and budget hotels in the suburbs. In the months that followed, they released their first official album, "Disc-One," completely independently, from which the singles "Griderai," "Nelle Luci," and "Misoginia" were taken. They are currently working on their second album, scheduled for release by the end of 2018.
The Baronissi Blues Festival is promoted by the Municipality of Baronissi in synergy with the Cultural Association Tutti Suonati and with the moral patronage of the Campania Region.
The blues and solidarity partnership is also renewed through the partnership, for the fourth consecutive year, with the AVSI Foundation, which is committed to cooperation projects promoting human dignity, with a particular focus on children's education. Following the "distance support" program for Syrian hospitals and children in refugee camps, the 2018 edition supports the "Iraq. A Kindergarten for Qaraqosh" project to rebuild and open a new preschool "because the future starts with children and the greatest global emergency is education." This year's program of the Tende Campaign will be characterized by the word "home," explored in its concrete and symbolic meaning... "concrete as the buildings that need to be rebuilt where terrorist militias have burned or looted everything, and symbolic as a reminder of the need for care specific to every man and woman."
A nursery school to support children and families returning—after years of living as displaced people in Erbil—to their village, finally liberated from ISIS, ensuring their safety. Education for children, therefore, is a source of new beginnings.
