Yellow balloons and bottles of champagne: this is how the Five Star Movement celebrated the abolition of life annuities in Piazza di Montecitorio, in front of Parliament. "We're eliminating a privilege, not a right, and when something is done for people, it's right to celebrate," Francesco Silvestri, deputy group leader in the Chamber of Deputies, told members.

"Great satisfaction for the abolition of life pensions. It is a good sign for the country that has been expected for a long time. Keep going! #ByeByeVitalizi". So said Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Twitter.

"The best gift we could give to Italians in the first 100 days of government is to cut the useless costs of politics forever. And we are doing it concretely, starting with life pensions, privileges without head or tail. The music has changed and we are making it clear from the first "notes". Bye bye, life pensions!". This is what Gianluca Castaldi, M5S senator, states in a note.

How long have we waited for these privileges to be cancelled! Now we are here, a dream becomes reality, bye bye life pensions. Deputy Prime Minister Di Maio wrote this on the blog delle stelle, speaking of 'a conquest of civilization' and explaining that 'the official announcement will arrive this afternoon. We will celebrate this event in Rome, in the Chamber and we invite all of Italy to celebrate with us. Because it is a celebration for the whole country'.

“Today is a historic day, at least for the symbol that represents this decision that after more than 30 years establishes a clear principle, if you have paid contributions then you are entitled to the life pension, if you have not paid, you are not”. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio interviewed during Uno Mattina.
