Campania will be the fifth region visited by the 2018 Goletta Verde tour, Legambiente's historic campaign that has resumed its voyage along the Italian coast to denounce and combat "sea pirates" and to inform and raise awareness about the importance of protecting this precious ecosystem and its beauty. The environmental vessel will stop at the port of Vico Equense (Naples) from Sunday, July 8th and Monday, July 9th, and at Marina di Camerota (Salerno) on Tuesday, July 10th and Wednesday, July 11th.
A journey, that of Goletta Verde will end on August 13th in Trieste, after 22 stops, and which this year will have among its priorities that of affirming the central role of the Mediterranean in the policies of reception and integration, so that it can recover its role as a hinge between cultures and worlds that cooperate.
A tour – also made possible thanks to the support of CONOU, National Consortium for the management, collection and treatment of used mineral oils, and of the partners Novamont and Ricrea, National Consortium for the recycling and recovery of steel packaging (La Nuova Ecologia and rinnovabile.it are instead media partners) – which also this year has the objective of denouncing the threats to the Italian seas and coasts, unfortunately well known for some time, starting from the poor purification that in Italy continues to be an unresolved emergency.
An assault, that to our sea and our coasts, which in fact does not stop, as also confirmed by the data of the new Mare Monstrum 2018 dossier by Legambiente on the illegal sea based on the work of the Police and the Port Authorities. Also this year Campania confirms itself as the leader in Italy: the contested infringements were 2.715, over 7 per day, and almost 6 for every kilometer of coast. Crimes increased compared to the previous year by a good 4,7 percent. The people reported and arrested were 2.843, and the seizures 959, a significant increase of 14,3%.
Campania is also the worst at a national level for the number of violations related to non-existent or malfunctioning purifiers, illegal sewage discharges, illegal dumping of sewage and waste: 1.347 crimes were contested by the police in 2017, an increase of 43% compared to the previous year and with a boom in terms of people reported or arrested, 1419 (+23,2%) and in terms of seizures, 526 (+16,8%). Unregulated construction is a plague that our country is struggling to rid itself of and that makes a horrible display along the most beautiful coastlines: clientelistic politics still tries to clean up illegal houses, little or nothing is demolished and the few mayors who do so are condemned to isolation and electoral defeat. Campania also holds the national record in the sector of illegal cement on the coasts: 702 violations were ascertained, 878 people were reported and arrested and 243 seizures were carried out.
On the front of illegal fishing, a widespread practice that produces harmful effects, not only on the ecosystem and biodiversity, but also on the health of consumers and the economy of the country, Campania settles in the middle of the ranking 278 violations, with 248 people reported and arrested and 68 seizures. Finally, there is another, not insignificant, enemy of the sea. There are incompetent yachtsmen and there are pirates of the sea, who travel on their vessels contemptuous of the rules and the lives of the people they meet along their route. Motorboats and motorcycle scooters are the main defendants: they plough through the waves, entering off-limits areas of delicate ecosystems, such as those of marine protected areas, or they sail too close to the coast, seriously endangering the lives of unaware swimmers. Liguria tops this ranking, with 403 violations reported, holding 13,8% of the total. Second is the omnipresent Campania, with 388 violations detected (+33%) and 298 people reported or arrested and 122 seizures.
During the stages Goletta Verde will cross paths with other summer initiatives promoted by Legambiente in Campania such as the historic information and awareness campaign Riciclaestate, created in collaboration with Conai, to talk about separate waste collection in the region's tourist resorts, and Vele spiegate, the project of volunteer camps on sailing boats in Cilento with volunteers from all over Italy engaged throughout the summer in beach and seabed cleaning activities and scientific research.
Finally, as always, with the Sos Goletta service, Legambiente assigns an important task to citizens and tourists, asking them to report anomalous situations of water pollution: pipes that discharge directly into the sea but also suspicious slicks. The technicians of the mobile laboratory will study the complaints and reports received, and then forward them to the competent authorities. To send them, just connect to the site www.legambiente.it/golettaverde, or write to sosgoletta@legambiente.it.
