Fortunata Fortugno, the woman killed in an ambush on March 16 in Reggio Calabria, was killed by mistake. The true target of the attack was Demetrio Logiudice, a boss close to the Tegano clan. Investigators are convinced of this and today arrested four people, including the perpetrator, Paolo Chimenti, the 28-year-old son of Pasquale, who was murdered in an ambush on February 15, 2018. After a series of forensic tests and with the help of video surveillance cameras, the Reggio Calabria Flying Squad's investigation led to the arrest of Paolo Chindemi, 28, of Gallico, and three others: Mario Chindemi, the alleged killer's uncle, Santo Pellegrino, and Ettore Corrado Bilardi. During a conversation overheard in the car, the suspects—including Paolo Chindemi—referred to the fact that the woman was turning to look back when she was struck, and that she died because of the man she was in the car with, whom she had essentially shielded, saving his life. In another conversation overheard, the alleged killer confessed to murder. Footage acquired from public and private video surveillance systems, as well as local and vehicle surveillance surveillance, were crucial to solving the case. The Calabria Crime Prevention Unit of the State Police also contributed to the enforcement of these measures. Those arrested are Paolo and Mario Chindemi, born in 1990 and 1968, respectively; Santo Pellegrino, born in 1986; and the convicted felon Ettore Corrado Biliardi, born in 4. Born in 1952, the son-in-law of the historic Reggio Calabria 'Ndrangheta boss, "Don Mico" (Domenico) Tripodo, was murdered in 1977 in Poggioreale prison on the orders of the De Stefanos. The four are believed to be part of an emerging mafia group affiliated with the 'Ndrangheta, committed crimes against individuals and property, and had established relationships with members of established 'ndrine operating in the Tyrrhenian and Ionian districts of the province of Reggio Calabria. Intercepted conversations during the investigations demonstrated that the fundamental goal of the gang, led by the Chindemis, was to assert its criminal leadership by conquering ever-larger swathes of the Gallico area, including through the use of weapons, planning actions aimed at seizing control of extortion activities against local businessmen and merchants, and eliminating members of opposing factions.
