The Caltanissetta Prosecutor's Office has requested the indictment of three police officers accused of obstructing the investigation into the Via D'Amelio massacre. Mario Bo, 58, now the Gorizia police commissioner, Fabrizio Mattei, 59, and Michele Ribaudo, 61—all charged with conspiracy to commit slander—allegedly induced the false informer Vincenzo Scarantino to falsely accuse the men, later sentenced to life imprisonment for the July 19, 92, massacre in which Judge Paolo Borsellino and five members of his security detail were murdered. The investigation was closed on March 8. The investigation was initially shelved and subsequently reopened after a review process was initiated in Caltanissetta in parallel with the Borsellino IV trial, which confirmed the obstruction of justice, as clearly stated in the reasons given. These charges implicate the investigators of the "Falcone and Borsellino Group," led by the then head of the Palermo Flying Squad, Arnaldo La Barbera, including Bo, Ribaudo, and Mattei. Many of the alleged incidents allegedly occurred in Rome and Pianosa, where the super-prison was located, where Scarantino was allegedly beaten into accusing the men of the Guadagna clan of Palermo.
