The summer season seems to exacerbate the problems that affect the weakest sections of the population and the elderly represent, to a large extent, this category and it is precisely an elderly lady who is the protagonist of this event with a "happy ending". This morning, a woman over ninety, Ester, called for help from 113 reporting that she had been robbed in her home. The operator who received the call kept the conversation going with the lady to calm her fear as she was alone, simultaneously sending the crew on duty to control the territory of the San Carlo Arena Police Station to the scene. When the police arrived at the elderly lady's apartment, it was clear that there had been no theft, the house was in order, the lady was well-groomed and there was money on the kitchen table. However, the officers, with the sensitivity needed by those who are engaged in this type of service, reassured the lady so that she realized that nothing had been stolen since the money was still on the table. At that point, the old lady candidly confessed that she had not having suffered any theft but, believing that the “State Police” was nearby, she had called 113 because she wanted to have breakfast and wanted someone to take care of her. With the affection that such a statement deserves, the officers offered her a good breakfast in a nearby bar, making her very happy, and then accompanied her to the nearby parish in Via Centauro where the priest, who knew the lady well, took her into custody with the promise that he would find a person who could keep her company. The smile and thanks that the lady gave to the police officers who intervened were, for sure, a tonic to resume the service of prevention and repression of crimes.
