The loot from this morning's robbery at Naples's central post office amounts to approximately half a million euros. Two criminals (not four as previously reported) gained entry through a tunnel dug from the sewer system. The plan was carefully planned, starting with the choice of date: this morning, pension payments began at the post office, which these days also includes the fourteenth month's salary for social security pension recipients. The criminals expected to find a significant amount of money, and so they did: in the vault at the Piazza Matteotti office, there were eleven bundles of banknotes totaling 650,000 euros, and the robbers took eight of them. Approximately half a million euros, therefore, although the actual amount stolen is still being determined. The action was swift, allowing the escape before law enforcement arrived: the main post office building is just a few meters from both the police headquarters and the provincial Carabinieri headquarters. The two criminals entered a room behind the vault through the floor shortly after 8:00 a.m. They were both dressed in white overalls and their faces covered by balaclavas. One of the two, armed, threatened an employee to open the vault, while chaos broke out outside the cash registers: the post office halls were already crowded with people queuing, mostly pensioners, who, amidst a wave of shouts, fled. There was also an armed security guard stationed beyond the cash registers, who waited for a clear line of fire and then pointed his gun at the criminals, who fled through the same tunnel. Dozens of State Police officers arrived on the scene, launching a search across a vast area, including a helicopter and a diving team to explore the sewer tunnels. So far, there has been no sign of the criminals. Some office employees suffered minor illnesses and were examined. An ambulance was called, but no one required hospitalization.
