A gang of criminals was recently active at the Naples Central Post Office in Piazza Matteotti. The robbers, at least four armed men wearing white overalls and balaclavas, emerged from the floor in a room behind the cash registers. A crowd had already gathered in the halls earlier this month for pension payments. Moments of chaos ensued, with shouts and stampedes. The robbers managed to steal several envelopes containing the money for the payments and fled through the same passageway only when a security guard—who had been waiting for a clear line of fire, with no one in front of him—pointed a gun at them. Some employees felt slightly unwell. An ambulance arrived on the scene. The police responded in force (the police headquarters is just a few dozen meters from the scene of the robbery) and launched a search for the robbers, with the assistance of a helicopter. No shots were fired during the robbery, and no one was injured.
