Naples. The two bandits in white overalls who carried out the sensational heist at Naples's central post office this morning, stealing approximately €500,000, have disappeared like ghosts into the sewers. Searches through the sewers and the blockades at several strategic exit points by law enforcement were unsuccessful. The two had a safe escape route and disappeared without a trace. The hunt continues, but so far has been unsuccessful. The heist caused chaos and illness, especially among the many pensioners, but no injuries. The criminals chose a special day, the beginning of the month, coinciding with the payment of pensions and the fourteenth month's salary for social security pension recipients. The bandits entered the building through a tunnel dug by the sewer system. They expected to find a significant amount of money, and so it was: in the vault at the Piazza Matteotti branch, there were eleven bundles of banknotes totaling €650,000, and the robbers took eight of them. That's approximately half a million, although the actual amount stolen is still being quantified. The action was swift, allowing the robbers to escape before law enforcement arrived: the central post office building is just a few meters from both the police headquarters and the provincial Carabinieri headquarters. The two criminals entered a room behind the vault through the floor, shortly after 8:00 a.m. They were both dressed in white overalls and their faces covered by balaclavas. One of the two, armed, threatened an employee to open the vault, while chaos broke out outside the cash registers: the post office halls were already crowded with people queuing, mostly pensioners, who, amidst a wave of screams, fled. Beyond the cash registers, there was also an armed security guard, who waited until he had a clear line of fire and then pointed his gun at the criminals, who fled through the same tunnel. Dozens of State Police officers arrived on the scene and began a search across a vast area, including with the assistance of a helicopter and a diving team to explore the sewer tunnels. So far, there has been no sign of the criminals. Some office employees suffered minor injuries and were examined. An ambulance was called, but no one required hospitalization.
