A distraction, a freak wave, or perhaps illness caused a spectacular accident in the port of Baia, in the Phlegraean Fields, where tragedy nearly occurred. A mechanic aboard a powerfully powered dinghy was conducting tests in the water between the Aragonese Castle and the tourist marina. For reasons currently being investigated by the Coast Guard, the vessel suddenly reared up, with the driver, a 47-year-old skilled mechanic, resident of Giugliano, falling into the water. The vessel, after spinning several times and without a driver, ended up on the dock of the Omlin shipyard, catching fire. Thanks to the prompt response of the shipyard staff and the intervention of the Coast Guard, alerted by witnesses on land, the man was recovered from the water unharmed and firefighting operations began. The whole thing ended with the complete destruction of the vessel but without harm to people or other boats, some of which were quickly removed from the scene of the fire and taken to shelter.
