“I complained to Vittorio about some anonymous text messages, related to my activity as president of a ski sports association, and he replied 'are you complaining? I risk being killed by my brother'”. He confided his fears to a friend who shared his passion for skiing, Vittorio Materazzo, the engineer killed with dozens of stab wounds, in front of his home, in Naples, on November 28, 2016. Answering the questions of the prosecutor and the lawyers, in room 115 of the Court of Assizes of Naples, is Stefano Romano, a chartered accountant, a friend of Vittorio in the last three years of his life. The conversation between the two dates back to a month before the murder. Vittorio spoke to Romano about his doubts about his father's death and the suspicions he had towards his brother Luca, who he believed was the murderer of his father. Suspicions that also turned into complaints and requests for the exhumation of the body. “He suspected,” the professional said, “that a false certificate had been produced to justify the death of his parent” because “the family did not want scandals.” Among the witnesses who today testified to the Court was also one of the sisters of the accused and the victim, Simona Materazzo. A few years apart and very similar to Luca, Simona recalled, answering the questions of the prosecutor and the lawyers, the minutes following Vittorio’s murder. “I heard the screams… I looked out onto the balcony… I thought it was an accident. I went down to the street, preceded by my cousin… on the sidewalk I saw a body, but I didn’t recognize my brother.” Simona said she only understood afterwards that it was Vittorio.
Simona also spoke about the disagreements that arose in the family after the death of her father, Lucio, regarding the inheritance. Ups and downs in the relationship, made up of clashes but also periods of relaxation, where however Vittorio's severity emerged, insistently urging his brother to find a job, especially after the death of his father Lucio who took care of Luca's support. Before leaving the courtroom, Simona gave a timid greeting to her brother who responded from behind bars with a wave of the hand, while she left keeping her eyes down. Today, Luca Di Monte, the partner of Maria Vittoria Materazzo, the sister who was closest to Luca, also testified. After having also recalled the family problems connected to the inheritance, he became emotional several times when, answering questions, he had to describe Luca, "left without the support of his father in times of need". In the evening the two walked the dogs and sometimes met: "he told me that Vittorio considered him guilty of his father's murder and that he intended to exclude him from the inheritance". The man also reported that Luca feared that Vittorio had tapped his cell phone. The first witness to testify was the doctor who performed the autopsy on Vittorio Materazzo's body. The doctor explained to those present the dynamics of the murder, the places where it began and ended. Vittorio was fatally injured by lung injuries. The next hearing has been set for next Thursday.
