Camorra land is now a symbol of rebirth: the 11-hectare plot of land confiscated from the Galasso clan on Via Nuova San Marzano in the 90s has been cleared and handed over to a group of associations. This morning, the Municipality of Scafati notified the occupants of the eviction order signed by the prefectural commission upon input from the Nocera Inferiore Prosecutor's Office. This has initiated the process of awarding the land and associated warehouses, seized in 1992 from a company owned by the wife of mafia boss Pasquale Galasso, to the leading associations ALPAA (Association of Agricultural and Environmental Workers and Producers), Finetica and Ferro 3.0. The land, cultivated until recently by the Merolla family, a family of fruit and vegetable traders from Poggiomarino, had been confiscated and handed over to the Municipality of Scafati, which issued a tender for the free assignment of the property a year ago. This morning, the takeover took place, attended by municipal police officers, led by Commander Antonio Forgione, the Carabinieri, and the firefighters, in the presence of officials from the confiscated assets agency. This is a crucial step towards the revitalization of the land located on Via Nuova San Marzano, next to the villa once owned by the boss and his family, now the headquarters of the Guardia di Finanza company. The land will be used for growing local fruit and vegetables, particularly spring onions. This initiative not only represents a sign of retaliation against the Camorra, but will also provide many young people with the opportunity to work on their land. The Prefect of Salerno, Salvatore Malfi, and Prefectural Commissioner Giorgio Manari, underscored the importance of the move at a press conference held at the Scafati Town Hall this afternoon. During the meeting, Prefect Malfi highlighted the symbolic and cultural significance of today's eviction: "An example of the fight against crime," said the government delegate. "Seizing clan assets is a great thing, especially when a prefectural commission does it, which is even more surprising. It's an important achievement for Scafati after the dissolution of the city due to the Camorra, and it represents a way to restore democracy in the city."
Giorgio Manari, president of the Triad Commissioner, echoed the same sentiment: "After the technical administrative process required to achieve this result, we've reached the finish line. This is legality making its way." The land will be granted free of charge for 10 years to the group of associations called Alfa: "It will be a bulwark of legality, and we were able to work toward this goal because the assignment of the property was a priority for the commission," Manari explained, "a success also achieved with the impetus of the Nocera Prosecutor's Office and the activism of the Salerno Prefecture."
This is the first tangible sign of the state's presence and the recovery of lost legality in the municipality dissolved due to mafia infiltration over a year ago. (rf)
