The sudden death of Enzo Lippolis, on March 3, 2018, full professor of Archaeology at La Sapienza University of Rome, where he was director of the Department of Ancient Sciences, represented a great loss for the world of archaeology and for Italian culture as a whole.
Four months later, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii is organizing a conference: “Studium Erga Populum Studium Erga Sapientiam” in memory of Enzo Lippolis, for the scientific community and beyond.
The two days of study scheduled for July 12 and 13 are intended to be an opportunity for debate on the research and recent discoveries of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, for which Prof. Enzo Lippolis had dedicated his efforts. As part of the research and study project on the Capitolium and the Forum, conducted in recent years and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Archaeological Park, he had given his contribution to the knowledge of the ancient city and to the administrative choices of Pompeii.
On the first day, the recent discovery of a sepulchral monument in the necropolis of Porta Stabiana, which came to light last year during the restoration work on the state-owned buildings of San Paolino, attributed to Gneus Alleius Nigidius Maius, will be presented. The crucial aspects of the epigraphic text commemorating the deceased will be discussed on July 12 in Naples at the University of Federico II.
The second day will illustrate the most recent archaeological discoveries from the excavations conducted by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, in collaboration with other national and international research institutes, both within the ancient city and in the extra-urban area of Pompeii.
Admission to the conference days is free.
