Police have arrested the alleged killers of Fortunata Fortugno, the 48-year-old woman killed on March 16 in Reggio Calabria by a series of gunshots fired by multiple assailants while she was in a car with her lover, Demetrio Lo Giudice. The 53-year-old man, believed to be a leading member of the 'Ndrangheta clan of the same name, was wounded in the arm during the attack. The two were caught by the hitmen near a stream in the Gallico neighborhood, where they had secluded themselves in an off-road vehicle. The arrest warrant was issued by the Reggio Calabria Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA) against four individuals, all Italian, charged with various counts of murder and attempted murder with multiple aggravating circumstances, including mafia-related crimes, mafia association, possession and carrying of illegal firearms, aggravated damage, aggravated theft, and illegal possession of distinctive insignia and objects used by police forces. The breakthrough in the Reggio Calabria Flying Squad's investigation came thanks to images acquired from public and private video surveillance systems and wiretaps ordered against several suspects. The Calabria Police Crime Prevention Unit also contributed to the execution of the measures. Details of the operation will be announced at a press conference scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Reggio Calabria police headquarters.
