“It could have had more serious consequences,” begins Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Comitato Valori collinare, “but the prompt intervention of the firefighters prevented a frieze, placed under the cornice of one of the buildings in Piazza Vanvitelli, which appeared detached, from falling onto the pavement below, which was very crowded in the evening hours, when the episode in question occurred.”
“The 115 men – Capodanno emphasizes – promptly intervened yesterday evening, removing the damaged frieze. At the same time, the stretch of pavement below was temporarily cordoned off with colored plastic strips and subsequently with a net supported by iron rods fixed to the ground. Today, the investigations and routine checks should continue, before removing the barrier in question.”
“Along the partially cordoned off sidewalk, there are several public establishments serving food and drinks,” Capodanno points out. “Especially in the evening, many young people usually hang out there, also because of the presence of several gazebos with chairs and tables. However, even at other times of the day, that stretch of sidewalk is among the busiest.”
"Unfortunately, in this respect, the situation in Vomero, in this period, appears particularly difficult - continues Capodanno -. Not only are the roadways and sidewalks full of potholes and depressions, but you have to watch out for debris that can rain down from above. Another episode of this kind, with the fall of a frieze from the intrados of a balcony, had already occurred a few days ago, on Saturday, in the early hours of the night, in via Merliani. Also in this case, in a stretch of road where there are several public establishments, frequented by many young people."
"It would seem that these episodes have a greater incidence in the summer months, due to the higher temperatures and the resulting temperature changes - underlines Capodanno - I believe that the problems related to security and public safety must be considered a priority, inviting in this regard, also in light of these latest episodes, the relevant offices to monitor, also through appropriate prevention activities, in order to avoid the generation of situations that could cause more serious consequences.
