Torre del Greco. Leri Bertonati, sister of Matteo, the 26-year-old who died in the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, took to social media with his three friends, Gerardo Esposito, 26, Antonio Stanzione, 29, and Giovanni Battiloro, who remembered his brother in a long post on his Facebook page. The four were supposed to go on a seaside vacation in Calabria, but then their plans changed: to Nice with their sister Leri, and then on to Barcelona. The four children of our land weren't supposed to be on that bridge that morning, but instead, like so many others, they found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. “I will always think of you with a smile, the one you made me smile at the end of every argument because it was impossible to get angry with you. Normal things have never been your strong point, and you certainly couldn't have left us in a normal way,” he wrote on Facebook. “You overwhelmed us and left us speechless, and suddenly we were left without your music. Life is wonderful for the simple fact that we are alive, we are here, and we still have the chance to take the first step, to forgive, to forgive ourselves, to give each other love and strength. We have learned at too high a cost that we are only here for a moment, that the time we have to live without regrets is too short, it can slip through our fingers as if it were nothing. We must commit ourselves to not feeding our lives with ugly feelings like hatred, anger, the desire for revenge, or searching for blame. Whoever is to blame, there will never be a night when we don't go to bed thinking of our four children. I hear talk of blame and justice. Personally, I don't care about justice.” Nothing, I don't want justice. Whatever sentence those responsible for this tragedy serve, it won't give me back my brother and his best friends, it won't give me back their smiles and their dreams, it won't give me back the mess they made when they played, forcing me to find another place to study. I call true justice conscience, the kind that will make these people lose sleep and the kind that, at the end of their days, will make them relive the suffering they brought to the families of these victims. That's why we must do our utmost to ensure that this pain becomes the greatest lesson that life has placed before us with all the power in the world. Let's stop procrastinating, let's stop holding onto anger, let's live in love with life, always remembering that love is stronger than anything it encounters.
