The mayors of Capri and Anacapri, Gianni De Martino and Franco Cerrotta, have written to the President of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca, and the General Director of the ASL Napoli 1 Centro, Mario Forlenza, regarding the problems of psychiatric care. A jointly signed document, released this morning by the two municipalities, states that "since the island of Capri was assigned to the ASL Napoli 1, the levels of care have progressively deteriorated, despite the professionalism and dedication of the psychiatric staff, with the length of stay on the island gradually decreasing." Regarding mental health, the mayors point out that there is no transportation available for home visits, nor a dignified place to accommodate the time needed to carry out the work and allow staff to stay overnight on the island in the event of a psychiatric emergency. There has also been controversy over the creation of District 37 on the island, which, the mayors criticize, "has not led to an improvement in the situation, but rather a deterioration in services." But the most serious issue is the upcoming retirement of two psychiatrists from Uosm 24, which risks causing "a further intolerable lack of psychiatric care for residents in the two municipalities." Finally, the mayors of Capri and Anacapri point out to De Luca and Forlenza that during the summer months, the island becomes a bustling metropolis, crowded with both tourists and day trippers, and is constantly under the scrutiny of the international media. "Despite this, no reinforcements are provided to deal with psychiatric emergencies. The only emergency psychiatric intervention and care provided during the night is provided by the 118 emergency service."
